Wastewater treatment plants consume energy to remove pollutants and the potential energy derived from sludge in various forms is not enough for energy self-sufficiency. The paradigm of wastewater treatment is shifting towards the energy-neutral status of net-zero production of carbon dioxide. To achieve the energy-neutral wastewater treatment (ENWT), research interests are oriented on four subjects; carbon redirection, novel nitrogen removal, biogas production and artificial intelligence. ENWT provides the important function of producing energy and water to an industrial megacity.
