About BLESS Lab

(Biotechnology Laboratory for Environmental Sustainability and Survivability, BLESS)

The Biotechnology Laboratory for Environmental Sustainability and Survivability (BLESS), led by Prof. Hyokwan Bae at UNIST, focuses on innovative wastewater treatment processes and sustainable environmental technologies by integrating environmental biotechnology with data science. Wastewater treatment plants consume energy to remove pollutants and the potential energy derived from sludge in various forms is not enough for energy self-sufficiency. The paradigm of wastewater treatment is shifting towards the energy-neutral status of net-zero production of carbon dioxide. To achieve energy-neutral wastewater treatment (ENWT), research interests are oriented on four subjects: carbon redirection, novel nitrogen removal, biogas production, and artificial intelligence. ENWT provides the important function of producing energy and water to an industrial megacity
